What sensors does it have?

My brother described the Pi as an answer waiting for a question! It's such a cool piece of technology, but then you don't know what to do with it.

Around 2004 I was visiting a nursing home and saw a resident who had gone deaf through old age and the nurse trying to speak to him. And I thought: If only we had a miniature cheap computer with speech recognition software, a microphone and a display, the staff would be able to speak to him without any trouble.

Those things are now available, but I guess the smartphone is the main platform for anything like that.

Cool, so many options pingbin.com/2012/12/30-cool-ideas-raspberry-pi-project/

While not raspberry pi as such, it's all part of the internet of things - these are what I'm looking at at the moment:
moorescloud.com
lockitron.com

@cweiske, I haven't bought anything at the moment. There's general purpose IO pins on it, but I'm not too flash at soldering.

Anything USB can be stuck into it - I have an old TV stick for example (I just couldn't get the thing working well).

Clearly, this almost immediately begs for http://www.thinkgeek.com/product/8a0f/ to be plugged in and hooked up.

@Darren - Did have a look at those a few weeks back, and some are fairly interesting; but I think I'd be a lot happier with something more home automation focused (less soldering! More UPnP!)

I wish I had a nest and a lockitron - I can't seem to talk to my Samsung Aircon except via the official app at the moment; and finding my keys... forget it!
